Quadruped robot

October 2021: Air bridge guard robot concept for Berlin airport

The “air bridge”, also known as Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB), is an enclosed and elevated passageway which extends from an airport terminal gate to an airplane. Usually, it has also a branch way by stairs to the airfield.

The air bridge is considered a sensitive security area since a person can hide themselves or suspect objects in the bridge after onboarding and off-boarding. Thus, the inside area of the bridge needs to be surveyed and controlled by a security guard after each onboarding and off-boarding. In most times, this surveillance happens manually to check for all corners and hideaways, in the bridge, that may not be in the direct sight of stationary security cameras.

Our team developed a concept to proof the feasibility for a prototype realization at BER airport in Berlin.

The BER airport may support to develop an autonomous mobile security solution to secure the air bridge area. This solution could be a mobile guard robot equipped with a security camera. The robot will patrol, control and record the full inside area of the bridge. As an alternative proposal, an already developed quadruped robot could be used. The robot will be able to handle stairs and navigate freely with all ramps, floor types and multi floor while providing a precise navigation. Some proved samples you may find here:
